Reja 6
Wojtek Walczyk
2025
The mural dedicated to Wojciech Korfanty is located on the wall of a tenement house at 6 Mikołaja Reja Street in the Katowice district of Zawodzie. The author of the mural is Wojciech Walczyk, who transferred the image of the Silesian politician and activist onto the 13-meter facade, inspired by his archival portrait.
The current composition combines several ways of depicting the figure of Korfanty. The central part features a monumental, multicoloured portrait constructed from geometric planes. They are accompanied by fragmentary images – an enlarged eye and a realistic, black-and-white portrait – juxtaposed with intense fields of yellow, red, blue, and green. The layered form of the mural emphasises Korfanty's historical significance while simultaneously giving his figure a contemporary and dynamic character.
The first, black-and-white version of the work was created in 2018 to mark the hundredth anniversary of Wojciech Korfanty's speech in the Reichstag. After repeated acts of vandalism, the mural was restored. In 2025, the artist created a new, colourful version of it, which stands out more prominently in the city's space and serves as a contemporary tribute to one of the most important figures in the history of Upper Silesia.
