Markiefki 96
Wojciech Walczyk
2019
On the wall of a tenement at the intersection of Markiefki and Katowicka streets in Bogucice, there is a mural dedicated to Jerzy Kukuczka – one of the most outstanding mountaineers in the history of world alpinism, the second person to summit all eight-thousanders.
The project was initiated by district councillors who wanted to commemorate a figure strongly associated with Silesia in the public space. The image of the mountaineer was inspired by an authentic photo from Kukuczka's expedition to Annapurna in 1988. The dynamic composition captures the harshness of the high mountain environment as well as the focus and determination that accompany climbing in extreme conditions.
The monumental portrait introduces a symbolic element into the fabric of Bogucice – a reminder of courage, determination, and the readiness to push boundaries. It is not only a tribute to an outstanding mountaineer but also a story about ambition and strength of character that have permanently etched themselves into the history of the region.
In the immediate vicinity, the Jerzy Kukuczka Himalayan Center is being built—an investment that aims to become a place for education, meetings, and fostering the memory of Polish achievements in the highest mountains. Work on the facility is ongoing, and this part of Bogucice will soon undergo another transformation.
The mural became the first visible sign of this change—a symbolic beginning of a new chapter for the district, where history and the future meet on one wall.
