Graniczna 13
2021
The mural commemorating Jan Furtok is located on the southern wall of the tenement house at 13 Graniczna Street in the city center of Katowice. The large-format artwork was unveiled on July 29, 2021, at the initiative of GKS Katowice fans associated with the "SK 1964" Fans' Association.
The composition depicts the dynamic silhouette of a footballer in the characteristic yellow and black "GieKSa" kit, running with the ball at his feet. The location of the mural near the main railway lines makes it well visible to passengers on trains entering and leaving Katowice.
Jan Furtok was one of the most outstanding players in the history of GKS Katowice and the club's top scorer in the Ekstraklasa. In 209 league matches, he scored 85 goals. He also played for the Polish national team and in the German Bundesliga, including Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt. The number "9" he played with has been officially retired by GKS Katowice.
The mural was created while the footballer was still alive and serves as a testament to the fans' recognition of his sports achievements and his lasting place in the history of the Katowice club.
Jan Furtok was born on March 9, 1962, in Katowice-Kostuchna. He began his football career at MK Górnik Katowice, and by 1977, he had joined GKS Katowice. Between 1979-1988 and 1995-1998, while playing for GieKSa, he played 209 league matches, scoring 88 goals, which is a club record. In the German Bundesliga, he was the best Polish scorer before the era of Robert Lewandowski. From 1988 to 1995, playing for HSV Hamburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, he played 188 matches, scoring 60 goals. In 1991, he became the Bundesliga's top scorer and was also chosen as the best foreign player of the tournament. He played 36 matches for the Polish national team, scoring 10 goals, and was, among other things, a participant in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. After ending his football career, he became a youth team coach at GKS, and also – to this day – the last head coach of GKS's first team in the Ekstraklasa (in 2005).
In 1986, Jan Furtok, wearing the GKS Katowice colours, won the Polish Cup. The number 9, with which he played throughout his career at Gieksie, was retired by the club and will forever be associated with his name. Until 2009, he was associated with GKS as the club president, and on January 5, 2010, he became the national team's sports director. In 2017, he received the special club award "Super Buka" – a special award from GKS Katowice. To this day, he lives in Kostuchna, a southern district of Katowice.
