Czary Mury: Marek Grela and Marta Piróg
2023
The mural commemorating Scoutmaster Jerzy Lis is located on the side wall of the tenement house at 58 Gliwicka Street in the Załęże district of Katowice, next to the mural "Girl with a Rifle." The large-format artwork was unveiled on September 18, 2023.
The portrait depicts Jerzy Lis in a traditional, pre-war scout uniform. The dignified, calm composition emphasises his role as a youth educator, social activist, and a man deeply connected to the local community. The project and execution of the mural were carried out by the artistic duo Czary-Mury, consisting of Marek Grela and Marta Piróg.
The project titled "Załęska Drużyna – mural in memory of Jerzy Lis" was initiated by Wiola Berlik as part of the IX edition of the Katowice Civic Budget. The project received significant support from residents, securing second place among local proposals.
Jerzy Lis (1907–1944) was a scoutmaster and social activist associated with Załęże. In 1924, he founded the 1st Bolesław Chrobry Scout Troop, one of the first scout troops in Upper Silesia. During World War II, he was active in the Home Army and the Silesian resistance movement. Even though he was safely in France, he decided to return to the occupied country. He was arrested by the Gestapo and shot in the German concentration camp Auschwitz in 1944.
