Chorzowska-Dębowa underground passage
ASP students/Małgorzata Rozenau
2025
In April 2025, as part of the IV edition of Mural Art Week, students from the Faculty of Painting and Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice created murals in the underground passage at Chorzowska and Dębowa Streets – a new, colourful gallery in the heart of the city.
The project "When Walls Have Ears" was created in collaboration with the ISKIERKA Foundation. The inspiration was the drawings of children treated in oncology wards – painted during workshops led by Professor Grzegorz Hańderek. The drawings, full of sincerity and emotion, were transferred to the walls by young artists – without any interference, in their original form.
What will you find in this mural?
- Authentic children's works: figures, symbols, and even the phrase "I'll kill you" – an expression of the struggle with illness and emotions difficult to articulate.
- The joint work of ASP students – including Julia Fitzermann, Amelia Sułkowska, Natalia Piątek, and many others – on transforming sketches into large-format art in a tunnel with an area of approximately 140 m².
- A vivid social message: murals are to leave the hospital wards and enter the city, stimulate reflection, and show that "walls have ears" – places that are sheltered but also listening.
